Gerrard enjoyed a 17-year-career with the Reds before leaving for LA Galaxy in 2015. The 36-year-old announced his retirement last year, and there had been rumours of a return to Anfield, which now seem to be coming to fruition.

The ex-midfielder will also be honoured by Liverpool and is set to receive the freedom of his home city.

He has been nominated for the civic award by Liverpool's mayor Joe Anderson, for his achievements in both club and international football, as well as charitable work on Merseyside.

The nomination will be officially agreed upon on January 18, with the ceremony to take place later in the year.

"I was stunned and overwhelmed when I heard my name was being put forward by the mayor to receive this honour,"? Gerrard said.

"Liverpool is my home city and so to be acknowledged in this way leaves me speechless. To even think about getting such an award makes me feel very humble and of course immensely proud."?
