"?Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has revealed just how good the AC Milan defence was back in the early 1990's, a time when the Rossoneri were arguably the best side in Europe.

Gullit joined Milan back in 1987 and enjoyed six successful seasons at the San Siro where he won endless trophies both domestically and on the European stage. The Dutchman featured in a side that is recognised as one of the best of its generation, underlined by the phenomenal achievement that saw them win the European Cup in consecutive seasons in 1989 and 1990.

The manager at the time, Arrigo Sacchi is understood to have been a key factor for the team's success as he created a side that was both miserly in defence, and exciting in attack.

Whilst the likes of Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard won plenty of plaudits for their goalscoring exploits, legendary defenders Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi are sometimes forgotten for their contribution to team during that successful period in the late eighties/ early nineties.

However, when speaking to the "?Italian media about his time with the Rossoneri, Gullit couldn't help but think back to the strength of the team's defence and how they used to excel in training, as well as during matches.

The 54-year-old revealed: "(Coach Arrigo) Sacchi was ahead of his time, a master of organisation. The secret was the repetition of training exercises. We'd attack with 11 against six, two central midfielders and four defenders and we never scored.

"Sacchi would then remove the two midfielders and even then we couldn't score, the defence was so well organised that all you could do was shoot from distance."?
