Rooney Says England Squad Can Challenge Anyone 'for the First Time'

Published on: 16 May 2016

"?England captain Wayne Rooney has hailed his international teammates, saying that he feels as though the players available to Roy Hodgson may be the most capable in over a decade.

Rooney played alongside the Three Lions' famed 'Golden Generation', which failed to make it past the quarter-finals of any tournament despite having some of the world's best club footballers.

Almost all of that generation has since retired or aged out of international football, but Rooney told "?Sky Sports this week that the current group of players is more capable of challenging for real honours than any other England side he's been a part of in his long career.

He said: "I feel we've got a very good squad. It's probably the first time I've felt the squad is capable in any given game of matching any team. But obviously it's one thing having that, and another being able to do that consistently throughout a tournament.

"You never know with the players we've got how well they can do. You saw in the last World Cup we went out at the group stage. We've had a good Euro Qualifiers campaign, but we need to make sure that we don't slack, that we keep going and keep pushing forward, and give ourselves every possible chance."

He added: "We've got players who can play anywhere across that front line. Myself, Jamie Vardy, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge can play out wide too. It's always difficult for opponent as well. It's going to be tough for the manager as well, I'm sure, to decide which players he will play in which games. But that's why he's manager, I'm sure he will make the right decision when it comes to it."
