Rashford to Start Against Australia as Rooney Rested, But Delph to Miss Euro 2016 After Injury

"?Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Fabian Delph picked up an injury in training this week, ruling him out of Friday evening's game against Australia at the Stadium of Light and effectively ruling him out of the summer's European Championships.

Delph was already expected to be one of the three players cut from Hodgson's provisional 23-man squad, and his latest injury means that he won't have the chance to prove his value to the team - with the England head coach confirming in a press conference on Thursday that he plans to leave Delph at home for the summer.

He said: "We don't have Fabian Delph with us, unfortunately. He's strained a muscle in his groin area so I've actually spoken to him and he's stayed in Manchester, and I've made it clear to him that that means probably he won't be with us either in the final 23 unless, of course, we have injuries. So I've put him on a standby list, which he understands and accepts.

"I don't think it's going to be a really long-term injury for him, so if I needed him and wanted him to come with us it's easy for me to call him and ask him to do so, but I have actually said to him that with the situation we have with the other 25 players it might be unlikely."

Hodgson: "It's pretty obvious that [Marcus] Rashford is going to play a serious part in the game." #threelions

Meanwhile, Hodgson also confirmed that Marcus Rashford - expected to start after Daniel Sturridge picked up a knock in training - will play a 'major part' in the match, while captain Wayne Rooney will start on the bench.

Joe Hart will also get a rest for the night, with Southampton's Fraser Forster set to start in goal.
