PHOTO: Mike Dean Awards Penalty for Handball Clearly Outside the Box in Championship Game

"?Mike Dean's level of popularity has taken another dip despite his demotion to the Championship for Saturday's Barnsley vs Leeds clash.

Unfortunately for the 'celebrity referee', his recent performances meant that, even without the circus of attention that the Premier League brings, he remained very much in the limelight.

Even more unfortunately, he made another big mistake. With Leeds trailing 3-1 at Oakwell, Dean pointed to the spot, awarding a penalty to Garry Monk's side for what was clearly a handball.

What was also clear was that it was comfortably outside the box, casting more doubt on his already wavering credentials as one of England's top referees.

Luckily for the 48-year-old, his decision didn't prove to be a game changer, as Leeds failed to find a late equaliser.

Criticism of Dean reached its peak after his decision to send off West Ham's Sofiane Feghouli against Manchester United earlier this month.

His decision on Saturday is unlikely to help him return to the big time anytime soon, although, in fairness, he could probably have had some help from the linesman.

Mike Dean. Demoted to the Championship. Has just given a penalty. For handball. And the handball was outside the box.
