Pepe Reina's Father Quashes Rumours That His Son Will Make Liverpool Return

Published on: 31 May 2016

"?Reports have been rife in recent days that former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is set to make a return to Anfield.

However, the player's father, Miguel, has moved to dismiss the rumours as pure speculation, as per Italian newspaper "?Corriere Della Sport.

Reina's father has been quoted as saying, "we do not talk about the [transfer] market in the family, we are not aware of the interest of Barcelona or other teams.

"Liverpool? There is nothing, just rumours. The great affection that Pepe has for the Napoli is known."

Despite having granted current first-choice Simon Mignolet an extended contract at the club in January, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged the Reds' need for an upgrade in the goalkeeping department already this summer by bringing Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius to Anfield.

The 22-year-old German appears set to start the season as Klopp's number one, but Reina's arrival would have been a shrewd move by the former Borussia Dortmund manager, to bring in some intense competition for places and experienced cover between the sticks on Merseyside.

"?"?33-year-old Reina enjoyed a hugely successful nine-year spell at Liverpool, having been brought to the club in 2005 for £6m by Rafael Benitez, and remains a popular figure among Liverpool fans.

The Spanish stopper's time at the club saw him make 285 appearances, while also picking up two trophies; the 2006 FA Cup and the 2012 League Cup. Reina was a Liverpool mainstay during an era in which the Reds also narrowly missed out on the Champions League in 2007 and Premier League glory in 2009.

Reina could still have been an asset to Klopp. In the modern era, 33 is no age for a goalkeeper whom, it is worth remembering, was of outstanding quality, during his pomp.

The Spaniard won the Premier League Golden Glove in three straight seasons between 2006 and 2008, and was also a member of Spain's all-conquering squad as they won the European Championships in 2008 and 2012, either side of World Cup glory in South Africa in 2010.
