Pep Guardiola Identifies Bayern Munich's Juan Bernat as Key Figure in Defensive Overhaul

"?It is no secret that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to completely reshape the club's squad in the summer, particularly in defence. The current back four of Bacary Sagna, Nicolas Otamendi, Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy is set to be totally changed.

The old adage is that defences win you titles, and Manchester City's has not looked close to being good enough to do that. On their travels, they have conceded four goals to both Leicester and Everton.

The area which has had the most heavy speculation over a replacement is left-back, a position which Clichy currently occupies. David Alaba was lined up at first, but now the "?Mirror report that Bayern Munich's other left-sided player, Juan Bernat, is the one who is on Guardiola's radar.

Guardiola signed Bernat for Bayern in 2014, in a deal with Valencia. They could re-unite, although one of Valencia's current full-backs is also linked - Jose Gaya.

The Catalan manager is also after a centre-back, with Kolarov expected to be dismissed in the summer. Southampton's Virgil van Dijk has been under assault from the rumour mill for a departure, and City are the frontrunners to steal him.

Bernat is expected to cost over £20m, but we have seen in the past that stumping up money is never a problem for City's billionaire owners.
