Payet Standoff Causing Friction Between Heads at Marseille & Affecting Lower League Clubs in England

Published on: 25 January 2017

"?The Dimitri Payet saga keeps rambling on, and with less than a week left in this transfer window, we could see the French midfielder return to Marseille, having told West Ham that he no longer cherishes their employment.

The Hammers have rejected three bids for the player, with the latest being an offer of around £23m. They are said to value Payet at £35m, and won't settle for a penny less, but Marseille are unwilling to pay more than £25m, and are holding out for as long as they can in order to get the best deal.

1. Marseille have told West Ham they won't pay more than £25 million for Dimitri Payet. Too low for West Ham.

That notion isn't unanimous, however. It is being reported that some top figures at the Ligue 1 club want to give up on the signing, while others are still intent on pursuing the player.

2. Split at top of Marseille - some want to give up on Payet because he's too expensive, some want to keep trying to sign him

Marseille isn't the only place where the heat is being felt. According to the "?Independent, the standoff is affecting as many as five teams - including West Ham and Marseille.

West Ham are said to have already agreed a fee of £12m for the purchase of Scott Hogan from Brentford, but won't move to seal anything until the Payet issue is resolved.

Brentford, in turn, have lined up players to come in and replace Hogan. Norwich's Sergi Canos and Coventry's Ben Stevenson are the main candidates, but Brentford can't act until they make money off their forward's sale.

It's likely that all of those deals will happen before the close of the window, but the clubs are sweating at the moment, hoping for the Hammers to agree on some sort of deal for the sale of the wantaway Frenchman.
