Onazi to Consider January transfer

Published on: 07 December 2017

Trabzonspor of Turkey midfielder, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi might be tempted to have a rethink of his initial decision to snub any transfer offer that comes his way in January, as scouts from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United reportedly watched him in action during his club’s last Turkish Super Lig clash. Onazi had declared emphatically last week that he was not in any way thinking about reviving his transfer thoughts in the winter, as he opted to mark time with Trabzonspor and seek a new opening after the World Cup. However, that line of action may become past tense, after Onazi played 90 minutes and notched an assist for his Trabzon-based side in a 3-0 win against visiting Antalyaspor on Monday, with top scouts of the big clubs in attendance. In the wake of the encounter, observers are now of a view that Onazi could revive prospects of a possible move to England, following interest in him by Birmingham City this summer, plus a link to Everton last year as well as trials with Chelsea and Tottenham back in 2009. Interestingly, further reports about the match at ?enol Güne? Spor Kompleksi reveal that other teams that made checks on stars on both teams include the German quintet of VfL Wolfsburg, SV Hamburg, Werder Bremen, Hannover 96 and VfB Stuttgart. Onazi has been courted by Newcastle, Spurs, Man City, Bremen, Wolfsburg and Hannover in the past, and expectations are rife that they could reopen interest in him this winter. Furthermore, after emerging with a silver medal at the 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria, Onazi trained with Spurs and Chelsea but was not signed due to work permit issues. It is for the same reason he missed out on a move to Birmingham in the summer transfer window, but must have impressed all scouts that watched him on Monday, having notched an assist four minutes before half-time which helped Trabzonspor thrash Antalyaspor 3-0.
