The Super Eagles were defeated 4–3 on penalties by DR Congo in the CAF playoff final in Morocco in November 2025, after regulation and extra time ended in a stalemate. The result secured DR Congo’s place in the FIFA Intercontinental Playoff in Mexico scheduled for March 2026.

Following the match, the NFF lodged a formal complaint, alleging that DR Congo had used players ineligible under FIFA regulations. The federation is seeking DR Congo’s disqualification and Nigeria’s reinstatement as Africa’s representative in the intercontinental playoff.

Speaking on the matter, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi stressed the seriousness of the complaint and the federation’s thorough preparation.

“We believe we have a strong case. We do not pursue matters that we consider an exercise in futility,” Dr. Sanusi said. “We have completed all necessary submissions and are now awaiting FIFA’s ruling. As far as we are concerned, we have presented a solid case and are waiting to hear FIFA’s decision regarding the issues we have raised.”

Should FIFA uphold Nigeria’s petition, the ruling could significantly alter the outcome of the playoff and impact Africa’s representation at the final stage of World Cup qualification.
