Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was in action for Leicester but his compatriot Ahmed Musa was benched as the Foxes beat West Bromwich Albion 7-6 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1 in the first game of the 2017 Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
Ndidi was later subbed off before the start of the second half, along with three other Leicester players.
New signing Jay Rodriguez put Wes tBrom 1-0 up with a stunning long-range strike before the brilliant Riyad Mahrez, who has asked to leave the 2016 Premier League champions, drew Leicester level with a brilliant solo effort.
In the shootout, in which the ABBA format was experimented, Marc Albrighton scored the decisive spot kick to send Leicester into the final.
The win means Leicester have qualified for the final of this year’s Premier League Asia Trophy where they will either meet Liverpool or Crystal Palace on Saturday.
West Brom had the first attempt on goal through Rodriguez following good play on the right wing by Matt Philip but his effort was blocked away for a corner.
Rodriguez eventually got on the score sheet in the 10th minute after volleying a shot from 25 yards which nestled into the top right corner of the Leicester net.
Leicester almost responded four minutes later but Matty James’ strike off an assist from Shinji Okazaki from the edge of West Brom’s 18 went narrowly wide.
In the 20th minute, Mahrez aimed a curler West Brom’s far corner only to see his goal bound effort blocked by Claudio Yacob.
A minute later Leicester won a free-kick close to West Brom’s box but Mahrez’s lame effort came off the wall before Tom Lawrence blazed the rebound way off target.
In the 24th minute, Mahrez made it 1-1 for Leicester after going on a solo run before hitting a low left-foot strike which flew past Ben Foster.
Leicester continued to create chances with Mahrez finding Ndidi with a delightful floated ball on 33 minutes but the West Brom defence quickly cleared the danger.
West Brom pushed forward and were almost rewarded in the 34th minute but were denied by a timely block from Yohan Benalouane off a dangerous cross from Philip.
In the 37th minute Leicester had a shout for a penalty following a foul on Ndidi but the referee waved play on.
Prior to the start of the second half, Ndidi, Okazaki, James and Islam Slimani all made way for Wes Morgan, Jamie Vardy, Andy King and Danny Drinkwater.
Five minutes into the second half Christian Fuchs fired in a shot with the outside of his left-foot but Forster made a food save.
In the 56th minute, James McClean also put West Brom ahead only to see his surprise left-foot shot go inches wide off the target.
On the hour mark, substitute Vardy beat the offside trap but saw his shot flash in front of West Brom’s goal.
West Brom won a free-kick in a good area in the 65th minute but Nacer Chadli’s strike was well saved by Ben Hamer in goal for Leicester.
With two minutes left West Brom’s Jonathan Leko hit a left-foot strike after good work from the right but his effort went wide off the target.
And in the final minute Vardy almost won the game for Leicester but was beaten to a long pass by Foster.
