Manchester United 3-1 Bournemouth: United Clinch Automatic Europa League Qualification With Big Win

Published on: 16 May 2016

Manchester United enjoyed a 3-1 home win over Bournemouth on Tuesday, finally bringing down the curtains on their Premier League campaign."?

The game, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, was unable to take place due to a suspicious item being found in the stadium.

The club later confirmed that it said item was an instrument used in a security training exercise, which was mistakenly left behind by a private firm.

A win for United would take them into fifth on the table, also meaning automatic Europa League qualification. For Bournemouth, a victory meant a 14th-place finish and a few extra quid.

The first half began a right bore, and Old Trafford seemed as quiet as it had ever been. Things wouldn't pick up until Wayne Rooney scored in the 43rd minute, following some great passing play in the Bournemouth box.

Juan Mata played a ball to Anthony Martial, who crossed in front of the goal. Marcus Rashford stepped over, leaving the ball for Rooney to stab home and score his 100th goal at Old Trafford.

The second half got off to a better start for United. Mata had a good early claim for a penalty, as replays showed that Steve Cook clearly brought the Spaniard down in the box, but the referee decided against awarding a spot kick.

Michael Carrick nearly scored from distance with a great shot, but the ball couldn't dip enough to get under the crossbar. Antonio Valencia would get a shot off from distance as well, forcing Bournemouth's keeper into an acrobatic save.

Rashford made it 2-0 with a brilliant finish on 75 minutes, however. The youngster worked a pass to Rooney, who whipped a cross in for Valencia, who in turn headed it down for Rashford to smash past Adam Federici.

Rooney's remarkable clipped ball over the Cherries' defence, in the 87th minute, put Ashley Young clean on goal with loads of time to finish. Young did not disappoint, scoring despite Federici's hand to his shot, and making it 3-0.

Bournemouth would pull one back, in stoppage time, through an own goal from Chris Smalling, who denied his own keeper David de Gea the Golden Glove. The award went to Arsenal's Petr Cech instead.

United, though, have automatic Europa League football secured for next season, finishing their campaign in fifth place with 66 points.
