Manchester City Bench-Warmer Richard Wright Finally Retires

"?Manuel Pellegrini was in the Manchester City spotlight at the weekend as he took charge of the club for one final fixture before handing the reins over to Pep Guardiola.

Pellegrini witnessed his team labour to a 1-1 draw against Swansea City but they have managed to secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Amidst all the drama, one long-serving Sky Blues player's retirement flew under the radar.

Yes, that's right, after a career spanning more than 20 years, Richard Wright is finally hanging up his gloves.

The 38-year-old joined Manchester City as their third-choice goalkeeper back in 2013 but he failed to make a single competitive appearance for the club.

Wright's last official match came against Colchester for Ipswich in a 3-2 defeat in the 2011/12 season and it came as a shock to all when the Citizens snapped him up.

The veteran goalkeeper's son announced the retirement on Instagram with a touching message: "What a career my dad has had as a professional footballer playing at every level. Gutted for it to be his last game as a professional footballer but can't wait to see what's in store for him."

Wright won the Premier League and the FA Cup in a brief stint with Arsenal but otherwise he spent the majority of his career moving clubs and struggling to find a permanent home.

However, Willy Caballero will clearly miss his Etihad bench-warming compatriot as he posted a photo of the pair together on social media.
