Man Utd Expected to Extend Star Goalkeeper David de Gea's Contract By Another Year

Manchester United are expected to soon trigger a clause in David de Gea's contract that would see the Spanish goalkeeper extend his current terms by another year and earn a pay rise to put him among the highest earners in the whole Premier League.

De Gea signed a four-year deal in 2015 that included the option of a further 12 months. Now, according to the Sun, the club are ready to exercise it and tie the 26-year-old stopper down until 2020, while increasing his weekly salary from £180,000 to in excess of £200,000.

"The club are looking to exercise their option to extend David's deal this summer," a source told the British tabloid.

"He will be given a pay increase. He has consistently been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for a number of years now. There shouldn't be any problems, but clubs have been sniffing around him for a number of years now."

De Gea came within mere minutes of leaving United for Real Madrid ahead of last season, with only a late technical hitch preventing the transfer from being completed before the window deadline.

Real were quick to blame United, but the Old Trafford club accepted no responsibility and De Gea quickly settled back into life in the Premier League - it was at point he agreed his current contract.

There have been no suggestions since that Real will reignite their interest. Manager Zinedine Zidane was always happy with Costa Rican international Keylor Navas as his number one, while speculation has shifted onto Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois over the last 18 months.

It remains in United's best interest, however, to secure one of their most valuable assets even while the opportunity is there to do so.

De Gea has won the club's Player of the Year award a record equalling three times, while no one has ever won three in consecutive seasons. But it's not a prize he's keen to win for a fourth time for understandable reasons after being kept so busy in recent years.

"I would prefer a striker to win. It's better for the team," he said when asked last month.
