Leon Balogun Benched Again As Contract Issues With Mainz 05 Lingers On

Published on: 05 November 2017

Nigeria international defender Leon Balogun was once again an unused substitute for German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in their 1-1 draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Balogun has played just once for Mainz 05 since helping Nigeria qualify for the World Cup, which was the 0-2 loss against ?Schalke 04 that he had to vacate towards the end after suffering a fractured cheek.

Back after having surgery he has been left on the bench by coach Sandro Schwarz in their last two games, a situation which German journalist ?Roland Mark told Owngoalnigeria.com has to do with the 29 year old becoming a free agent in the summer.

Mainz 05 are already planning for life without Balogun who has refused to sign a new deal despite his current deal set to expire in the summer, where he is expected to represent Nigeria at the World Cup 2018 in Russia.

Mark says as long as the issue of Balogun signing a new deal is not resolved, he will most likely not get enough games between now and the World Cup despite his unquestionable abilities at the back.
