Leicester 1-0 West Ham: Foxes Seal Nervy Win to Alleviate Relegation Concerns

Published on: 31 December 2016

Leicester scraped a 1-0 win at home to push themselves away from the relegation zone and end West Ham's three-game winning run.

Riyad Mahrez returned to the starting line-up for Leicester, while Slaven Bilic deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation with Andre Ayew in the middle of the three. Andy Carroll started up front."?

An early shot from Mahrez had Darren Randolph throwing himself into an early finger-tip save, with the now-famous atmosphere at the King Power roaring in the opening minutes. Islam Slimani struck the post with a header, with West Ham instantly under the cosh.

The chances just kept on coming in the first quarter of an hour. This time, Aaron Cresswell fired in a cross which Wes Morgan just deflected into an awkward position for the oncoming Michail Antonio at the back post.

It had been coming. Leicester broke the deadlock on twenty minutes with a cross from Marc Albrighton onto the head of Slimani, who made no mistake this time by powering it past Randolph. The Foxes will have been relieved that their early pressure had finally paid off.

West Ham started to grow into the game a little more, and Leicester were forced to dive around into blocks everywhere to prevent an equaliser. Dimitri Payet's shot was saved, and Daniel Amartey cut off the waiting Ayew before the ball was hacked clear.

Antonio then smacked a volley off the crossbar. How were the Hammers not level? Harvard Nordtveit then provided a vital block to stop Slimani reaching a cross, and Antonio failed to square the ball adequately to Ayew in a two-on-one at the other end. Frantic!

A Mahrez free kick was well saved by Randolph and the half time whistle blew, finally giving everyone a breather after a rip-roaring first half.

It was a much more leisurely start in the the second half, headlined by an injury for Mark Noble. Robert Huth managed to intervene just as Carroll was pulling the trigger in the penalty area.

Kasper Schmeichel added his own contribution with a top save from an Aaron Cresswell 'daisy cutter' free kick, shifting from the wrong direction to keep it out. West Ham had been dominating for much of the second half, not that many Leicester fans were happy to give them credit.

Play-on every time for WHU though

The pressure on the referee continued, the fans chanting 'you don't know what you're doing' after a yellow card to Schmeichel for dissent. Nordtveit had lunged into an ugly challenge on Ben Chilwell, but you could see why a yellow, and not a red, was given.

A bit precious from the Foxes fans, perhaps? An earlier challenge from Daniel Amartey could have been a red, but you didn't hear them booing when only a yellow was brandished.

Leicester fans appeal for everything soo annoying

Everything was getting a bit nerve-rattling for Leicester. Danny Simpson kicked the ball away for a yellow after his foul, and the home side worked to wind the clock down.

A late effort from Ben Chilwell was saved as stoppage time approached, and Shinji Okazaki saw a shot blocked up in the air by Winston Reid. The second half was ending like the first had.

It finally ended 1-0, with Leicester earning a much-needed victory to alleviate their relegation struggles.
