Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi, scored a late goal as Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1 in the Chinese leg of the 2017 International Champions Cup in Shanghai on Wednesday.
Iwobi, who started off from the bench before coming on for Mesut Ozil, finished off Aaron Ramsey’s cross with virtually the last touch of regulation time to cancel out Robert Lewandowski’s first half penalty opener.
In the shootout, Iwobi scored to put Arsenal 4-3 ahead before Emiliano Martinez saved Juan Bernat’s kick to give the Gunners the win.
Bayern wasted no time in making their presence felt as they took the lead from the penalty spot in the ninth minute through Lewandowski following a foul on Bernat by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
In the 32nd minute, Arsenal almost equalised but record signing Alexandre Lacazette’s shot was turned behind by Bayern’s keeper Tom Starke after Mesut Ozil had opened up the opposition defence.
Bayern almost doubled their lead in the 37th minute but Petr Cech pulled off a brilliant save to deny Thomas Muller.
Just four minutes later, Cech was called to action again, this time keeping out a point-blank half-volley from Real Madrid loanee James Rodriguez.
On the stroke of half time, Arsenal made the game’s first change as new signing Sead Kolasinac was replaced by Reis’s Nelson.
At the start of the second half, Arsenal made three changes with Iwobi, Theo Walcott, Joseph Willock and Cohen Bramall replacing Ozil, Lacazette , Francis Coquelin and Krystian Bielik respectively.
Bayern continued to dominate and were close to going 2-0 up on 59 minutes only for Cech to deny David Alaba from scoring from a free-kick.
With two minutes remaining, Bernat had the chance to seal the win for Bayern but Nacho Monreal was alert to the danger and prevented Arsenal from conceding a second goal.
And in the 90th minute Iwobi headed in Ramsey’s cross to send the game into penalties.
