South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has dismissed reports claiming the country submitted a joint bid with Botswana to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), clarifying that South Africa is currently pursuing a solo bid for the tournament, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Speculation had emerged after Friday’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee meeting, suggesting that Botswana and South Africa had teamed up to bid for the hosting rights. However, McKenzie refuted the claims in comments made to respected football journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
“We are going alone but will not close the doors on our neighbours if it becomes necessary,” McKenzie said.
The minister’s remarks indicate that while South Africa’s primary plan is to host the 2028 AFCON independently, the option of a joint bid remains open should circumstances demand regional collaboration.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia has also formally declared its interest in hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, adding further competition to the bidding process.
CAF is expected to carefully evaluate all submissions before announcing the host nation for the 2028 edition of Africa’s flagship football tournament.
