The announcement was made as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee met in Rabat, Morocco, to deliberate on key issues relating to future competitions, including the selection of host nations.

The proposed joint bid is built around a strategic partnership between Botswana and South Africa, with both countries aiming to pool resources, infrastructure, and organisational capacity to deliver a successful continental showpiece. South Africa’s experience as a former AFCON and FIFA World Cup host, combined with Botswana’s growing investment in sports infrastructure, is expected to form the backbone of the bid.

CAF is expected to assess detailed aspects of the proposal in the coming months, including stadium readiness, training facilities, transport networks, accommodation, and overall hosting plans. A final decision on the 2028 AFCON host or hosts is anticipated later in the year after the evaluation process is completed.

Botswana and South Africa now join a growing list of countries expressing interest in hosting the tournament, underlining CAF’s broader objective of expanding AFCON’s reach and strengthening football development across the African continent.
