Huge Blow for Southampton as Star Defender Is Reportedly Ruled Out for 3 Months

Published on: 24 January 2017

As per the "?Express, Southampton's star defender Virgil van Dijk has reportedly been ruled out for three months due to injury.

After damaging his ankle in the Saints' 3-0 win against Leicester City, Van Dijk was unable to complete the match and following a series of scans, the full extent of the injury has been revealed.

Losing his main man is obviously a huge blow to Southampton boss Claude Puel, and whatever happens next, Van Dijk will certainly miss his team's crucial EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday evening. The Saints are 1-0  after the first leg.

With the Dutchman now expected to be out until mid-April, Puel will perhaps rue selling Van Dijk's defensive partner Jose Fonte to West Ham.

Van Dijk himself has been linked to a host of clubs this season, including Liverpool, Manchester City and current league leaders Chelsea.  Given the injury, any suitors will obviously now have to wait until the summer before potentially renewing their interest in the former Celtic player.
