"?England legend turned BBC pundit Gary Lineker has tipped Glenn Hoddle to become the next England manager after Roy Hodgson left the post earlier this week.
Bookmakers expected Gareth Southgate to take charge on a temporary basis but the former Middlesborough and England under-21 boss declined the offer.
This has turned heads towards former England boss Glenn Hoddle, who Gary Lineker is confident could reverse England's trend of dreadful performances at major tournaments.
"You could go down the route of a foreigner, but that has not worked before," Lineker said on BBC 5Live.
"We were really unlucky with Fabio Capello - Italians are so good at tactics and we found the one who probably wasn't, according to the players that I have spoken to who played under him.
"If you go English, it is really difficult. There are two or three in the top flight, Sam Allardyce, Eddie Howe and Alan Pardew - but they have not won the trophies you would anticipate.
"Do you go back to perhaps Glenn Hoddle? He was one of England's best coaches.
"Hoddle has been out of the game for a while, but he understands the game technically. He is the kind of guy who understands how to get over to players how to play in various systems."
Hoddle spent three years in charge of England from 1996 to 1999, in which time his England side were knocked out of the 1998 World Cup on penalties by Argentina, and failed to qualify out of the group stage at Euro 2000.
In spite of this, Hoddle was considerd to be one of England's most tactically aware managers, with a 60% win percentage that was only bettered by Sir Alf Ramsey and Fabio Capello.
