Former Red Devil Gary Neville & Reds Legend Jamie Carragher Open Up About THAT Spat in 2010

Published on: 12 January 2017

"?Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have been reminiscing about their infamous spat at Old Trafford, during a Manchester United vs Liverpool fixture back in 2010.

With the match locked at 0-0, referee Howard Webb awarded the Red Devils a spot-kick, after Javier Mascherano brought down Antonio Valencia in the Liverpool penalty area.

With both sets of players surrounding the official - who then proceeded to send Mascherano off - Neville was seen being pushed away by Reds' captain Carragher and ahead of this weekend's crucial meeting bewteen their old sides, the pair have revealed exactly what went on.

Carragher told "?Sky Sports: "He (Mascherano) hadn't been sent off yet and you (Neville) were in the middle trying to get him sent off.

"I was trying to stop him getting to the referee because I knew what was coming."

Whilst Neville was happy to admit he was looking to pressurise the official into giving Mascherano his marching orders, the former right-back insisted that it was all part of being involved in a big game.

The 41-year-old explained: "Mascherano had pulled down or tripped someone, I can't remember who he tripped.

"I went straight to the referee because one of the big things in these games is if you can get someone sent off, you do it straight away. He [Carragher] knew what I was doing and he would've done the same, by the way. In those days, you would go to the referee, talk to him and say 'are you going to make a decision?'

"Part of the big games is influencing the referee. You had to. Arsenal did it, Liverpool did it, we did it. Other clubs like Chelsea did it and I genuinely believe you could influence them. Not in a way that makes them a cheat or dishonest, no, but just that the pressure of being in Anfield or Old Trafford with that weight, it's not easy.

"It wasn't a massive part of the game, but it was part of the game that was there and this incident was over influencing the referee."

The two legends are likely to be at loggerheads once again on Sunday, as they cover the much anticipated clash between United and Liverpool for Sky Sports. Whilst victory for either side is vital, defeat is unthinkable for both, as they look to hunt down runaway leaders Chelsea
