Burnley 4-1 Sunderland: Andre Gray Destroys Woeful Black Cats With 22 Minute Hat-Trick

Published on: 31 December 2016

Burnley secured their third home win in a row after they demolished an appalling Sunderland at Turf Moor on Saturday.

A 22-minute-hat-trick by Andre Gray, and a converted second-half penalty from Ashley Barnes was enough to complete the destruction of the Black Cats - who scored late on with their first shot on target with Jermain Defoe well after the game was dead.

"?It was an uneventful opening at Turf Moor with neither side able to create a clear cut opportunity on a windy afternoon in the North West.

But the deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark when Gray took advantage of a Sunderland defensive mix-up and beat a poorly positioned Vito Mannone with ease.

The Italian goalkeeper, who was drafted in to replace the injured Jordan Pickford, held his head in shame trying to avoid eye contact with a furious David Moyes.

The Clarets could have been two up when Stephen Ward slipped away from defending Adnan Januzaj at the back post but wasn't able to steer his shot goal-bound.

To add to Sunderland's first-half misery, both Lamine Kone and Victor Anichebe limped off, adding to the ever-growing injury list at the Stadium of Light.

Gray should have doubled the host's lead at the beginning of the second half when once again he split open the Black Cats defence and ran through on goal, but Mannone regained some credibility after his first-half blunder with a smart save down low to his left.

Shortly after his short-lived recovery was forgotten when another long ball over the top split the visitor's defence and allowed Gray through on goal.

The 25-year-old striker controlled the ball and rounded the stranded Sunderland custodian who had misjudgingly advanced well outside of his area and tapped home into an empty net.

Just two minutes later the Burnley striker was at it again and completed his impressive 22-minute-hat-trick when he slotted home past Mannone after lovely link-up play with fellow striker Barnes.

The game was wrapped up when Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield broke into the area and was taken down by Sebastian Larsson.

Barnes stepped-up and converted cooly from the spot past the motionless Sunderland stopper.

Sunderland found a consolation goal with their first shot on target on 71 minutes, when Januzaj skipped-free from the Clarets midfield and played in Defoe who managed to get his shot away under pressure and at least give the travelling fans from the North East something to cheer about.

All in all Burnley were by far the better side throughout the 90 minutes, and Black Cats boss Moyes will be livid with how his side rounded off 2016.
