"?German footballing great Bastian Schweinsteiger admitted it is his "dream" to once again turn out for Manchester United, after bowing out of international football on Wednesday night.

The midfielder was visibly emotional has he played in his testimonial match for his country against Finland - which ended with a 2-0 win for the world champions - and a celebration was thrown throughout the night to celebrate the international career of the former Bayern Munich man.

Schweinsteiger has however been frozen out of the club scene at Old Trafford this season by Jose Mourinho - being made to train with the club's youth teams - but United could not successfully negotiate a move away for the 32-year-old before last night's transfer deadline.

However, the player told "?Germany's ZDF television after the game that he still hopes to play for United again this season, and that he'll consider a move to Major League Soccer when the time does come for him to depart.

He said: "New York is a great city, but I have a contract with United until 2018 and you know what the atmosphere is like at Old Trafford and it's my dream to run out there again.

Thanks for everything!

"I hope I get the chance to help the team again."

Speaking on his club future plans, he added: "I'm the kind of person who lives on intuition. I don't think of planning ahead, I like to live and enjoy the moment.

"I love football still too much and that means being on the field, playing, and that is what I am thinking about. I'm enjoying it too much at the moment and I hope that it continues a few more years yet."
