Atletico Madrid Line Up Shock Bid for Gonzalo Higuain

Published on: 18 June 2016

"?According to Spanish newspaper "?Marca, Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain is Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone's first-choice strike target this summer.

28-year-old Higuain has attracted the attention of a host of Europe's elite clubs, including Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain, but sits atop countryman Simeone's transfer wish-list, as he looks to add to a side that came up just short both domestically and on continent last season.

Higuain scored 36 Serie A goals last season, as Napoli were unable to sustain their sensational early-season form throughout their campaign, eventually finishing second to Juventus, who secured their fifth consecutive Italian title.

However, 2015/16 brought personal success for the former Real Madrid hitman, as he broke Gunnar Nordhal's record for Serie A goals scored in one season.

The Swede's tally of 35 goals in one Serie A season in his time at AC Milan was a record that had stood for 66 years, but Higuain took his season's total to 36 with a hat-trick against Frosinone on the final day of the campaign.

Such form makes it easy to see why Simeone is so keen on bringing Higuain to Atleti, but it is thought that Napoli are set to reject an initial bid of 60m and Matias Kranevitter, as they are holding out for a bid that triggers the Argentine's release clause of 94m.

Higuain is currently on international duty at Copa America, in the United States, and scored two goals as Argentina strolled into the semi-finals with a 4-1 thrashing of Venezuela on Saturday night.

Atletico Madrid recently announced that they have agreed a deal to bring Higuain's international team-mate Nicolas Gaitan, a long-term target of Manchester United, to the club from Benfica, and Simeone will maybe hope that the 28-year-old playmaker can sway the mind of Higuain, as he weighs up his options this summer.
