Nigerian International Alex Iwobi has called on Arsenal fans to 'have a bit more respect' for Arsene Wenger, and insisted that players at the club still back their manager.

The Arsenal boss is under huge pressure following a string of poor results, with large sections of supporters calling for the manager's head.

But Iwobi called Wenger 'a great man', and labeled fans 'impatient'

'They need to have a bit more respect in my opinion,' he told Sportsmail after Nigeria's friendly draw with Senegal on Thursday night.

'I mean, he's been at the club for 20 years, he's achieved a lot, obviously they're a bit impatient with the results and where they want to finish.

'We also want to finish there, we want to win the league like anyone else, I can guarantee we are trying our hardest.

'Whatever happens we are the players, we affect the result. We don't really look at the banners or what fans are screaming, we focus on trying to do our jobs on the pitch.'

Wenger has still not made public his plans beyond this summer when his current contract expires, but as Sporstsmail revealed this week, he is expected to sign a new deal.

Iwobi says the players are still in the dark over their boss's future, but says he hopes the Frenchman will stay at the Emirates 'no matter what'.

'Honestly, I'm waiting as much as you guys are. I don't know exactly what's going on. But me, personally, I'd like him to stay.

'No matter who is in the job, or who gets the role, we're always going to fight for the manager, every player always gives 100 per cent, no matter what, we'll just play.

'He always backs our players and he is a great man. He's been great to me as well, I'll always back him, no matter what.

'For what he's done for me, I'd like to say thank you, for bringing me in to such a world class team, and I'm playing almost regularly.'

Iwobi also insisted that there are no tensions in the squad, particularly toward Alexis Sanchez, who in recent weeks has cut a frustrated figure.

'He's a player that always wants to win, like everyone in the team,' added Iwobi.

'Maybe he shows it a bit more than anyone else, but that's what everyone is like, we all want to win, we're trying our best to win.

'But it's just a winning mentality, it's not something everyone in the team hates, we all love to have a player like that. The goals and the assists he brings to the team are great.
