Violence first erupted on Thursday evening in Marseille as English supporters clashed with locals in and around the port area of the city. That worsened in the days that followed after Russian supporters attacked English fans just hours before the two countries met on the pitch.

A number of truly shocking videos subsequently flooded social media.

English fans were also later attacked inside the Stade Velodrome by their Russian counterparts after the final whistle in the 1-1 draw. Elsewhere in France there have been other instances of violence as locals attacked Northern Ireland and Poland supporters in Nice, while German and Ukrainian fans clashed in Lille on Sunday.

UEFA have opened an investigation into the behaviour of Russian fans, while Russia and England have also been threatened with expulsion from the tournament altogether should such instances of violence persist.

England manager Roy Hodgson and Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney have already pleaded with their fans to behave themselves and stay out of trouble.

"As England manager, I'm obviously very concerned about the threat which is now hanging over us of sanctions that could be imposed upon the England team," Hodgson said in a special video message published by the FA.

"We've worked very hard to get here, and we really desperately want to stay in the competition. We appreciate your support at the matches of course, but I'm appealing to all of our fans to stay out of trouble and to try to make certain that these threats that are being issued are never carried out so we can attempt to do the best we can to stay in this competition by football means."

"I'd like to ask the fans that, if they don't have a ticket, please don't travel. For the fans with tickets: be safe, be sensible and continue with your great support for the players," Rooney added, looking ahead to Thursday's meeting with Wales.
